Residing on Queensland’s Gold Coast, this charismatic 32-year-old Surf Lifesaver/Ironwoman is known as one of Australia’s fittest female athletes. Underpinned by an incredible inner-drive and gruelling training regime, Hayley’s national and international records speak for themself. Certainly, out of the water, there are very few prouder Australian athletes who can compare her combination of striking physical appearance and accomplished presentation skills.
Hayley was the first athlete to win three Coolangatta Gold’s. She has won 19 Australian gold medals, ranking her one of the highest female competitors in Australia of all time. Over the past 10 years Hayley has consistently placed in the top three at the Australian Ironwoman Championships and is said to be unrivalled in big surf conditions. Competing both nationally and internationallyHayley Bateup is a well-known name across all surf sports. Hayley underwent shoulder surgery but still managed to come back at the end of the 2010/11 season and placed in the Australian Board Race and came 2nd in the Australian 2km beach run. She came back to the 2011/12 season firing with a great opener coming 3rd in the Coolangatta Gold. She also finished the season stronglywith a win in the Australian Board Race to equal Reen Corbett’s record of 5 Australian Board Race titles and with her silver and bronze medals also in the event could be named the best board paddler in Surf Life Saving History.
Multi Media Personality
Throughout Hayley’s career she has received keen media interest. She hasappeared in all avenues of media creating what is said to be the highest profilein surf sports. In 2008 she appeared in the channel 7 hit show ‘Gladiators’ as ‘Nitro’, the fastest gladiator which was profiled off her natural ability. Hayley is looking forward to working in the media and health and fitness industry as well as racing over the next few years.
Hayley's transition into Long Course Triathlon
Hayley has been dealing with a chronic shoulder injury for many years and the discipline of Ski Paddling has become problematic. With this in mind Hayley recently announced her immediate retirement as a SLS competitor. This decision will allow Hayley to fill a burning ambition to compete professionally in Long Course Triathlon. Many astute coaches and fellow triathletes believe that Hayley has the talent and the drive to make it to the very top of long course triathlon e.g. Ironman 70.3, Challenge Series, Rev 3 and ITU Long Course races.
